selections that you read. Each answer must be a well-written paragraph that is supported with
evidence from the reading.

you may think that Bailey White and James Thurber had unusual relatives. In an essay, compare Aunt
Belle with one of the characters in “The Night the Bed Fell.” Explain what makes each
character unusual. You might answer these questions: What does the character say and do? How does the
character interact with other characters in the selection? Which character do you like better?

humorous essays. In an essay of your own, describe what makes these essays funny. Cite two details
from each selection that contribute to the humor. Then, state which essay you find more humorous, and
explain why.

In “Rattlesnake Hunt,” Marjorie Kinnan Rawlings changes the way she
feels about rattlesnakes. In an essay, describe how her feelings change, and explain why they change.
Support your claims with two references to the selection.

Life,” Geoffrey Ward describes the cattle drives of the 1800s. In an essay of your own based on
Ward's essay, describe the qualities and skills that would have made a good trail boss.
